Seen by hiker Bruce Gaumond approximately 100 yards off-trail near Comet Falls (~4,800 ft) on the Comet Falls–Van Trump Trail, following footprints in 4–6 ft of compacted snow. Gaumond warned of an unstable snow bridge ahead and turned back; Wood continued onward toward Van Trump Park / Mildred Point.
Description
Light shirt, newly-purchased lightweight windbreaker. Carrying binoculars and a bird-watching book. Equipped for a day hike — no overnight gear, food, or shelter. Recently diagnosed with a heart condition, considering a pacemaker.
Conditions
Clear, low 70s°F at lower elevations. Record 1998–99 snowpack (1,122 in / 93.5 ft at Paradise) — much of trail above 4,000 ft buried under 4–6 ft of unstable, melting snow. Hidden crevasses, snow bridges, and swollen glacial creeks.
Search Effort
5-day search July 15–19. Up to 38 personnel at peak: backcountry rangers, firefighters, volunteers, 4–5 bloodhounds, and a helicopter. Heavy rain July 16 hampered effort. No clothing, gear, or remains ever found. Wood was the 65th person to disappear without a trace in the park's history.
