Tattoo of Japanese characters meaning "live" / "life" on left upper chest. Aide at Peninsula Behavioral Health Center; Johnson University graduate. Avid camper, hiker, and Bear Grylls / Man vs. Wild fan — but not a deep-wilderness expert. Family suspected he was quietly struggling with adulthood and grief over his grandfather's death a year prior.

Saturday, March 17, 2012 · ~4:00 a.m. — Microtel Inn & Suites surveillance in Cherokee, NC captured Derek leaving alone with a daypack. By 8:30 a.m. his white Ford Escape was parked in the lower lot at Newfound Gap (5,046 ft) on the TN/NC line. His family found the car themselves while driving back to TN. Inside: wallet, cash, credit cards, car keys, tent, sleeping bag, and a handwritten note reading "Don't follow me." Not a single visitor reported seeing him in the park that sunny Saturday.

$1,000+ of survival kit bought Mar 14–16: GSMNP maps, tent, sleeping bag, Gerber pack axe, military survival manual pages, knife sharpener, Coleman compass/thermometer, 100 ft of black paracord, headlamp, pocket knife, granola bars, waterproof watch, Bear Grylls survival tool pack (multi-tool, flashlight, fire starter). Also 5 empty Wal-Mart bags from cash purchases — contents never confirmed.Left in the car: tent, sleeping bag, wallet, cash, credit cards, car keys, and the note.Likely on his person: daypack, paracord, multi-tool, headlamp, knife sharpener, granola bars, possibly Realtree rain gear.Worn: gray hooded sweatshirt, dark track pants with white side stripes, dark/white athletic sneakers.
Conditions
Mid-March transition season. Valleys around Cherokee & Gatlinburg climbed into the 60s–low 70s under sun. At Newfound Gap (~5,046 ft) on the crest, daytime highs sat in the 40s/low 50s and overnight lows dropped toward the mid-30s. Wind exposure on the gap and ridgeline AT made it feel much colder. Spring storms, fog, and damp clothing can drive hypothermia fast at 5,000 ft even when valley weather feels mild. The 17th itself was an unseasonably warm, sunny Saturday with heavy visitor traffic.
Search Effort
NPS launched an immediate SAR radiating from Newfound Gap. ~55–70+ miles of trails were physically searched, including the AT and Newfound Gap-area side trails. Multiple scent-tracking K-9 teams worked daily off Derek's clothing. Three helicopter sweeps + one nighttime flight from NC and TN highway patrols, at no cost to the park. Searchers checked every natural and manmade shelter and were briefed to watch for Camel Crush cigarette butts (his brand). By Day 6 (Mar 22), ~60 searchers across 14 teams pushed off-trail into appealing departure zones and mapped each grid in GIS. A helicopter spotted a tarp near Deep Creek — unrelated to Derek. ~45 NPS staff + ~15 civilian volunteers + Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherokee Tribal EMS, NC/SC SAR-dog associations participated. Search was scaled back Mar 23 with zero physical clues found.
Grim Coincidence — Michael Cocchini
On Mar 18, 2012 , the day after Derek's search began, Michael Giovanni Cocchini, 23 , of Nashville disappeared in the same park. His car was found at a parking area near the visitor center outside Gatlinburg. He was not a hiker and had no overnight gear. Cocchini's remains were located in Aug 2012 , just 0.3 mi from his car. Derek's case remained unsolved.

Wilderness misadventure / survival attempt gone wrong — fits his Bear Grylls fandom, gear buying, and the brutal off-trail terrain; but he left his tent and sleeping bag, and a massive search produced zero trace.Suicide / mental health crisis — the note, the timing near his grandfather's death anniversary, the Bible and alcohol at the hotel, and leaving his wallet/keys all line up; but no body has ever been recovered.Voluntary disappearance / staged walkaway — early-morning departure, secretive cash buys at Walmart, an abandoned scene at Newfound Gap that could be misdirection; but he left his wallet, cash, credit cards, and ID, and no financial or identity activity has surfaced since 2012.Foul play (least supported) — total evidentiary absence and the simultaneous Cocchini case have raised eyebrows, but there are no witnesses, suspects, or signs of struggle.
